Roku Remote (Official)

What is Roku Remote (Official)?

Roku Remote (Official) is an entertainment app from Roku, Inc. and its affiliates. It lets an Android phone or tablet control compatible Roku streaming players and Roku TVs over your home Wi-Fi network.

The app has been installed more than 108 million times on Google Play, and it holds a 4.7 out of 5 rating from about 4.75 million ratings.

How does the Roku Remote app work?

Once the app is installed and connected to the same network as your Roku device, your phone works as a standard remote. You can move through menus, pick titles, adjust volume, and control playback.

Because the app runs on your phone, it can also offer features that a physical remote cannot, such as typing with your phone keyboard when you search.

What's new in version 14.1.2.10730047?

This release, dated 2026-09-22, is a maintenance update. The developer describes it as minor bug fixes, so no major new features are announced in these notes.

Anyone already using the app will see the update as a routine stability improvement.

Is Roku Remote (Official) free, and does it have ads or purchases?

The app is free to download from Google Play. It contains ads. It has no in-app purchases, so you should not expect to pay within the app to unlock functions.

The ads are the main trade-off. Users who dislike advertising in utility apps may find this more noticeable than the remote itself.

Android requirements and download size

The app requires Android 9 or later. Check your phone's version in Settings before installing if you use an older device.

A Roku streaming device or Roku TV on the same local network is needed for the app to be useful. Exact download size is not listed in the facts available here, so check the Google Play page for the current figure.

Pros and cons of Roku Remote (Official)

On the plus side, the app is free, has a high rating, and gives you a convenient way to control a Roku device without searching for a physical remote. It is also a good option for people who want to type on a phone keyboard.

On the downside, it contains ads, it depends on your Roku device being on the same network, and it will not control devices from other brands. Its usefulness is limited without compatible Roku hardware.

Who is this app for?

The app suits owners of Roku streaming players or Roku TVs who use an Android phone or tablet. It is especially useful for people who lose their physical remote or prefer to type search terms rather than scroll an on-screen keyboard.

Viewers without a Roku device will get little value from it, so it is best treated as a companion app for existing Roku equipment.
