What is TextNow: Call + Text Unlimited?
TextNow: Call + Text Unlimited is a communication app for Android made by TextNow, Inc. It gives you a phone number that you can use to make calls and send text messages through an internet connection rather than a traditional carrier plan alone.
The app is listed under Communication on Google Play and has more than 137 million installs, with a Google Play rating of 4.6 out of 5 from about 1.67 million ratings.
How does TextNow: Call + Text Unlimited work?
After you install the app from Google Play and set up an account, the app assigns you a number you can use for calls and messages. Calls and texts are sent over data or Wi-Fi, so a working internet connection is needed for the app to function.
Because the service runs over the internet, call quality and message delivery depend on your connection. Check the app's own notes on which features depend on a particular plan or setup.
What's new in version 26.42.0.0?
Version 26.42.0.0, last updated on 2026-10-19, is a modest maintenance-style update. According to the developer, it refines how calls and chats behave and includes changes to eSIM activation.
The developer describes the changes as subtle, with a focus on smoother overall performance rather than new headline features.
Requirements, size, and cost
TextNow: Call + Text Unlimited requires Android 9 or later. Check the Google Play listing for the current download size, since it can vary by device.
The app is free to download. It contains ads, and it offers in-app purchases for optional extras.
Pros and cons
On the plus side, the app is free, widely installed, and highly rated by users on Google Play. It can be useful as a secondary number or for messaging over Wi-Fi.
On the downside, ads appear in the free version, optional in-app purchases are available, and the app depends on a stable internet connection. Some users may find the ads distracting or the paid extras unnecessary.
Who is TextNow: Call + Text Unlimited best for?
The app suits people who want an extra phone number for calls and texts, students or travellers who need low-cost messaging over Wi-Fi, and users who are comfortable with ads in exchange for a free service.
People who need guaranteed carrier-level coverage or who dislike advertising may want to look at other options.
